Appeasing Nergal

This is a ‘Get Together’ pitch, where the creative leads facilitate a series of 20-minute group discussions about their project.

Appeasing Nergal explores friendship, isolation and boredom, showcasing how circus artists entertain themselves when trapped in a house together for an extended period of time. This show puts a light hearted twist onto the events of the last two years while combining it at the same time with technical juggling and other circus skills.

Skills and experience of the people involved

Acrobatch is a collaboration between Ben Kotovski-Steele and Simon Wood. Their previous show, Down Rebound, was praised for its genuine storytelling and representation of male friendship and compassion on stage as well as its deconstruction of performance norms and gender stereotypes on stage. Both Ben and Simon are proficient in a variety of circus disciplines including juggling, acrobatics, aerial rope, roller skating and contemporary dance and strive to blend circus and theatre to create honest and entertaining experiences for their audiences. Both Ben and Simon are associate artists with Fliptease and MAXIMA Circus/Steamworks Arts, and have numerous performance experiences both throughout Europe and within Australia.

As the producer for Acrobatch, Simon also has extensive history in writing successful funding applications and then organising and managing those funds and participants to deliver the project effectively. Previous grants include 2 x U15k (Down Rebound and Appeasing Nergal), DLGSC Creative Communities (South West Regional Circus Tour), Adelaide Fringe Artist Fund, DLGSC 15k+ (as an associate producer for Fliptease).

The third performer in this show is Luke Forrester. Luke is a highly acclaimed juggler whose past employment credits include: Opera Australia, Circus Vegas, Carnival Cruises, Circus Oz, Fliptease, Glastonbury Festival, Circus Aotearoa and Hudson’s Circus. He has been a frequent collaborator with Acrobatch for various cabaret acts and roving performances in the past 12 months.

Dramaturg and creative consultant for this work is Jess Smart from YUCK Circus. Jess is a founding ensemble member in YUCK Circus and also co-directed YUCK’s duo show Off Chops, which won the Melbourne Fringe Tour Ready award at FRINGE WORLD 2022. Other performance credits include The Leaping Lillies (Fliptease), Catch! (MAXIMA), and Deadset (YUCK).
