Every Brilliant Thing

A heartwarmingly funny play about depression.

“If you get through your entire life without ever once feeling crushingly depressed….then you probably haven’t been paying attention”.

Every Brilliant Thing is play about everything worth living for – from ice cream, to staying up late to watch TV, to the music of Ray Charles. It’s a responsible and hilarious way of talking about depression. With the help of the audience, it tells the story of a boy’s response to his mum’s suicide.

Affirming and uplifting, the play reaches into the soul of the audience, connecting and resonating in ways that holds and carries them from beginning to end.

This award winning play strikes the perfect balance between hurt and hope, using humour to have the hardest conversations.

Staged with minimal production requirements and in-the-round, it is designed for touring.

Performed at the Edinburgh Fringe, in NYC and across Europe, it debuted in Australia at Perth Festival (2016) and at Belvoir (2019) to critical & box office success.
Form and Style:
Every Brilliant Thing is a beautiful immersive piece of theatre performed by one actor on a small stage in the round. This production brings the audience into the performance, using the participants as the accompanying performers, and as the “readers” of the list. Every Brilliant Thing requires very little performance space and suits an intimate setting.
STAGING
  • The stage/seating configurations are all based around a 5m by 5m performance area.
  • Presenters are to supply a stage and seating area that suits this intimate setting.
  • Black Swan can assist Presenters with the creation of staging and seating requirements on a case by case basis, and then tour additional staging to suit the specific Presenters requirements.
  • Additional costs will be discussed dependent on the individual needs of the Presenter.
LIGHTING
Every Brilliant Thing has no specific lighting requirements.
  • Ideally a 2 colour wash that can be recoloured to a cool wash and a warm wash
  • 6 x Profiles as specials that can be re focused
  • Isolated House Lighting that can be dimmed independently of the Stage lighting.
SOUND
  • Good quality Full Range PA with:
  • 4 x Speakers (1 for each Seating Bank)
  • 2 x Sub Woofers
  • Mixer – 1 Channel for Microphone, 2 Channels for Playback, 1 Channel for Keyboard, Graphic EQ across Microphone Channel

To assist Presenters in delivering this work, Black Swan can provide additional touring Lighting and Sound equipment where road freight is the chosen method of transport.
