Journey with Kohesia Ensemble and experience the evocative sounds of Persian music played in a unique jazz style. New original music exploring unusual time structures and microtonal melodies will transport you to another place. Led by double bassist Kate Pass, the Kohesia Ensemble serves as a platform for Kate’s original compositions, which are influenced by her passion for both jazz and Persian music. Kohesia Ensemble explores unusual time structures and microtonal melodies, combining the sounds of Persian flute (ney), percussion (daf) lute (saz) and oud with jazz instruments for a truly unique listening experience.

Form and Style

The show is presented as a concert. There will be several songs, with talking in between to engage the audience, and provide explanations of songs and instruments.

Community and Audience Engagement:
School music workshops
Most of the musicians in the ensemble are experienced music educators who between them teach primary and high school ages children around Perth as well as at WAAPA and WA Youth Jazz Orchestra. The ensemble members would be available to conduct workshops in schools to enhance their music programs
The Kohesia Ensemble can deliver interactive, educational and fun music programmes and workshops to schools and libraries, or in the venue.
The workshops give the opportunity give student a chance to try the Kohesia Ensemble of Persian flute (ney), percussion (daf) lute (saz) and oud with jazz instruments for a truly unique listening experience.
The ensemble is able to work one on one and in groups and let student come away with some new thinking about instruments and music creation.
Adult Musician Workshops
Beyond their stage shows, Kohesia are passionate about interacting with local communities, to meet local musicians and to offer help with their music skills and creative ideas for themselves.
The Kohesia ensemble explores unusual time structures and microtonal melodies, combining the sounds of a range of instruments. It can provide professional development for musicians interested in a range of sounds across jazz and other genres and provide insight into the creation of unique work.
Adult/Child Non-Musicians Workshops
Kohesia Ensemble are also experienced at presenting workshops to non-musicians. This can provide the general public with an introduction to Persian music, poetry, culture and rhythms. The workshop also gives demonstrations and information about various instruments that people may not be familiar with.
Local Support Act
Kohesia is keen to bring other musicians from the touring area to open the show with some local content. If the presenters can identify local acts who are able to play a curtain raiser then the ensemble will engage with the local musicians on the show.
Post Show Q&A
Because the music is so unique, it tends to generate a lot of questions from audiences and to assist with these Kohesia can offer post show question and answer sessions for up to 30-minutes
Foyer Activation
Kohesia Ensemble can work with presenters to decorate the foyer of venues with Persian artworks, rugs and soft furnishings. Reza Mirzaei, a musician in Kohesia Ensemble, is also a visual artist and has works that could be displayed.
