Work from Home Survival Guide

  1. Routine – Get up at the same time every morning and get ready as if you are going to work.
  2. Workspace – Set up your workspace with nice smells, music etc. Create a vibe!
  3. Fresh Air – Spend a little time outside, even if it’s just a walk around the block. Enjoy that open air and just keep your distance from folk.
  4. Food – Get cooking! Get that slow cooker on…it’s so nice to work with the smell of delicious food.
  5. To-do-list – If you have limited work – create a list of other things that need doing around the house, things you always wanted to do.
  6. Check in – with your other fellow at-home workers to see how they are doing, it’s quite the adjustment.
  7. Distraction – Try not to get distracted by too much Covid-19 media. Just try and keep up to date with the necessary information only.
  8. Joy – Put some goodness out into the universe. Laugh, smile and connect (even if we can’t touch)

 Your Workspace

  • Pick the right spot – an area that’s out of the way and void of distractions such as other people or a TV.
  • Ideally, choose a sunny spot to work near a window, or make sure you set up sufficient lighting to avoid eye strain and fatigue.
  • Sit in a chair that prevents you from hunching over your laptop or make a “standing desk” out of your kitchen counter.
  • Make sure your workspace is near a power outlet, so you can plug in everything you need.
  • Don’t work from your bed, otherwise you may begin to associate your bed with work and may have trouble falling asleep.
  • Add personality to your workspace by decorating it with a house plant or piece of art.

Australian Tax Office support measures

The Australian Tax Office (ATO) has announced it will implement a series of administrative measures to assist Australians experiencing financial difficulty as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Options available to assist businesses impacted by COVID-19 include:

– Deferring by up to four months the payment date of amounts due through the business activity statement (including PAYG instalments), income tax assessments, fringe benefits tax assessments and excise

– Allowing businesses on a quarterly reporting cycle to opt into monthly GST reporting in order to get quicker access to GST refunds they may be entitled to

– Allowing businesses to vary Pay As You Go (PAYG) instalment amounts to zero for the March 2020 quarter. Businesses that vary their PAYG instalment to zero can also claim a refund for any instalments made for the September 2019 and December 2019 quarters

– Remitting any interest and penalties, incurred on or after 23 January 2020, that have been applied to tax liabilities

– Helping affected businesses pay their existing and ongoing tax liabilities by allowing them to enter into low interest payment plans.

Anyone impacted by COVID-19 is advised to contact the ATO to request assistance on their Emergency Support Infoline 1800 806 218, when they are ready, to discuss their situation.
