From Be-Bop to Hip Hop

What does jazz and hip hop have in common? Let the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra and Zero Emcee take you on a journey on how melody, improvisation and self expression cross music genres. Bold Brassy Horns and Phat Grooves will raise the roof and have you tappin' your toes.

From Be-Bop to Hip Hop looks at the musical lineage from Jazz to Hip Hop.

Themes such as self expression (improvisation & free styling), melody, rhythms and grooves, call and response are explored and demonstrated through performance.

The repertoire is drawn from historic jazz repertoire and then leads into original music by Noongar hip hop MC – Zero Emcee. WAYJO’s artistic director, Mace Francis has expanded Zero’s music for the WAYJO 18-piece line up.

form and style

This show is a 60 minute set with 20 musicians on stage. Similarities are showcased and explained through the performance but this is not an educational show, if is meant to be a fun and engaging performance.

community engagement

WAYJO does a lot of community outreach and school incursions. The music directors are all music educators. Zero Emcee is also an educator at Djinda Boodja, and has extensive experience in facilitating song writing workshops.

We would be able to engage in a wide range of music making, composition and performance workshops.
